Shop authentic hand-knotted rugs selected for craftsmanship, design and individual character. Explore Persian, Afghan, Kazak, Turkish and other Oriental weaving traditions, with every available rug individually photographed.
What is a hand-knotted rug?
A hand-knotted rug is built by tying individual knots onto a foundation before the pile is cut and finished. Construction methods, knot density, materials and finishing vary by region, workshop and individual piece.
Craftsmanship and materials
Wool is widely used, while finer rugs may include silk or wool-and-silk combinations. Knot count is only one part of quality; design, materials, foundation, finishing and condition also matter.
Choosing a hand-knotted rug
Measure the room and furniture layout, then use the filters to compare exact size, origin, style, material, age, colour and price. Review all photographs to assess pattern, pile, borders and condition.
Buying from Rugoutlet
Our family has selected rugs for three generations. Every rug is checked before dispatch and individually photographed, with free UK delivery, 30-day returns and personal advice available.
Frequently asked questions
Are all handmade rugs hand-knotted?
No. Handmade rugs can also be handwoven, flatwoven, hand-tufted or produced using other methods. Check the recorded construction on each product page.
How long does a hand-knotted rug last?
Longevity depends on materials, construction, traffic and care. A well-made rug used appropriately can provide many years of service.
