Persian Tabriz Oliya Handmade Silk Rug Cream & Burgundy Floral Medallion Rug 350 × 250 cm

Introduction

This exceptional Persian Tabriz Oliya rug embodies the elegance, refinement and artistic sophistication that have made Tabriz carpets among the most celebrated creations of Persian textile art. Handwoven in Iran and measuring an impressive 350 × 250 cm, this magnificent rug combines a luxurious silk pile with a highly intricate decorative composition, creating a statement piece of remarkable beauty and distinction.

The design is centred around an elaborate floral medallion set within a luminous cream field, surrounded by an intricate network of scrolling vines, arabesques and floral motifs. Rich burgundy borders frame the composition, providing dramatic contrast and enhancing the architectural balance of the design.

The silk pile elevates every detail. Light interacts with the surface to create subtle variations in tone and depth, revealing the extraordinary precision of the weaving and enhancing the complexity of the pattern. This characteristic lustre is one of the defining qualities that has made fine Persian silk rugs highly prized by collectors and interior designers alike.

As a new handwoven piece inspired by centuries of Persian artistic tradition, this rug successfully bridges heritage and contemporary luxury. Whether placed within a formal drawing room, elegant dining space, luxury apartment or prestigious commercial interior, it provides both decorative impact and cultural significance.

The Oliya design demonstrates the mastery of Persian ornamentation, combining symmetry, elegance and extraordinary craftsmanship into a single harmonious composition. It is a rug created not merely to furnish a room, but to become its defining artistic centrepiece.

Design & Pattern Analysis

The design appears consistent with the highly refined decorative traditions associated with Tabriz weaving. The Oliya pattern is characterised by extraordinary complexity, elegant floral ornamentation and a carefully balanced medallion-centred composition.

At the heart of the rug sits a magnificent multi-layered floral medallion. Rich burgundy tones radiate outward from a delicate central rosette, creating a visual focal point that immediately draws the eye. The medallion is executed with exceptional precision and demonstrates the sophisticated geometry often found within the finest Persian carpet designs.

The cream field surrounding the medallion provides an ideal canvas for the intricate network of floral motifs that extends across the surface. Delicate flowering vines, arabesques, palmettes and scrolling botanical forms intertwine seamlessly throughout the composition. Despite the density of decoration, the design remains remarkably balanced and harmonious.

The corner spandrels mirror elements of the central medallion, reinforcing the overall symmetry of the rug. Their graceful floral ornamentation creates continuity between the field and the border system while contributing to the architectural structure of the composition.

One particularly notable feature is the fluidity of the vine work. The scrolling tendrils appear almost calligraphic in nature, demonstrating the influence of Persian manuscript illumination and decorative arts. This flowing ornamentation introduces movement while maintaining the formal symmetry essential to the overall design.

The principal border is richly executed in deep burgundy and serves as a dramatic frame for the lighter central field. Floral motifs, rosettes and scrolling foliage continue throughout the border system, creating visual richness and reinforcing the unity of the composition.

Multiple guard borders introduce additional detail and depth. Together they create a sophisticated framing device that enhances the grandeur of the central design.

The overall aesthetic reflects centuries of Persian artistic development, drawing inspiration from Safavid court carpets, architectural ornamentation and classical Persian garden imagery. The result is a composition of remarkable elegance and visual complexity that rewards examination from both near and far.

Colours & Decorative Appeal

The colour palette is one of the defining strengths of this Persian Tabriz Oliya rug. The combination of cream, burgundy, ivory and delicate accent tones creates a luxurious and highly versatile decorative scheme.

The dominant cream field introduces brightness, elegance and spaciousness. Unlike darker-ground carpets that create dramatic contrast, the light field allows the intricate pattern work to emerge with remarkable clarity and sophistication. This quality makes the rug particularly effective in enhancing natural light within an interior.

The rich burgundy tones used throughout the medallion and border provide warmth, depth and visual structure. The contrast between the cream field and burgundy framework creates an impressive sense of balance while giving the composition strong decorative presence.

Secondary tones include ivory, pale blue, soft grey-blue, muted taupe and subtle hints of blush. These colours enrich the pattern without overwhelming the overall harmony of the design. Their restrained application reflects the sophisticated colour sensibilities associated with fine Tabriz weaving.

The silk pile contributes significantly to the rug's visual appeal. Depending upon the angle of light, the colours appear to shift subtly, creating depth and movement across the surface. This natural luminosity is one of the qualities most admired in high-quality Persian silk carpets.

The palette is exceptionally versatile from an interior design perspective. The cream field allows the rug to work comfortably within both traditional and contemporary settings, while the burgundy accents provide sufficient character to create a strong focal point.

Whether paired with antique mahogany furniture, painted Georgian interiors, modern neutral schemes or luxurious contemporary furnishings, the rug brings warmth, sophistication and refinement to its surroundings.

Origin & Historical Background

This rug originates from Tabriz, one of Iran's most prestigious and historically significant carpet-producing centres. Situated in north-western Iran, Tabriz has been associated with fine carpet weaving for centuries and occupies a distinguished place within the history of Persian textile art.

The city's importance grew significantly during the Safavid era, when Persian carpet production reached extraordinary artistic heights. Royal workshops produced carpets renowned for their intricate designs, technical excellence and aesthetic sophistication. Many surviving examples are now held in major museums and private collections around the world.

Tabriz weavers became celebrated for their ability to combine technical precision with artistic innovation. Floral medallion compositions, hunting scenes, pictorial carpets and highly intricate all-over designs all emerged as hallmarks of the region's weaving tradition.

The Oliya design represented in this rug reflects these enduring traditions. The sophisticated medallion structure, dense floral ornamentation and harmonious colour palette are all characteristic of the artistic language developed within Tabriz workshops over generations.

Collectors often regard Tabriz rugs as among the most versatile of Persian carpets. Their exceptional drawing, balanced compositions and wide range of colour palettes allow them to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The use of silk further enhances the prestige associated with Tabriz weaving. Fine silk rugs from the region are particularly valued for their remarkable clarity of detail and luxurious visual qualities.

Today, Tabriz continues to produce some of the most admired carpets in the world. Rugs inspired by the region's historic designs remain highly sought after by collectors, designers and enthusiasts seeking exceptional craftsmanship and enduring artistic value.

Construction & Craftsmanship

This Persian Tabriz Oliya rug is handwoven using a luxurious silk pile supported by a wool and silk warp. This combination contributes significantly to both its visual refinement and structural quality.

The silk pile is central to the rug's extraordinary appearance. Silk fibres allow exceptionally fine detail to be achieved, enabling the intricate floral motifs, medallion elements and border ornamentation to be rendered with remarkable precision. The natural lustre of silk also enhances colour depth and creates the changing visual effects associated with fine Persian carpets.

The wool and silk warp provides strength and stability while supporting the delicate precision required by the design. This combination has long been favoured in high-quality Persian weaving traditions where refinement and durability must coexist.

Throughout the rug, the precision of the pattern is particularly impressive. The medallion remains perfectly balanced, floral motifs maintain consistency and the border system demonstrates exceptional control. Such qualities require a high degree of skill and careful execution.

The intricate vine work, arabesques and floral sprays illustrate the artistic sophistication of the design. Each element has been integrated seamlessly into the composition, creating a sense of movement without disrupting the underlying symmetry.

At approximately 5 mm in thickness, the rug possesses a refined profile that enhances the clarity of the design while maintaining a luxurious tactile quality.

The finishing work further contributes to the rug's elegance. The crisp borders, symmetrical composition and finely executed fringes reflect the attention to detail associated with quality Persian carpet production.

With proper care and professional cleaning, a silk Tabriz rug of this calibre can provide lasting enjoyment and remain a treasured decorative asset for generations.
