Malayer is a city in western Iran, located in the Zagros Mountains in Hamedan province. Malayer is a trade centre for the many agricultural villages of south-eastern Hamedan and a small-scale manufacturing centre noted for its production of carpets.
Malayer is the 2nd largest city of the Hamedan province, in Western Iran, it has a history of rug weaving and has some popular parks.
In the city of Malayer carpet weaving is very popular and has a good market. The designs, especially the older ones, which are very common in Malayer, are more or less similar to those made in Arak region such as Sarugh and Farahan. Some carpets of this region are famous by the name of “Armani-baft” that has the same design as the Caucasian carpets. The ancestor of these weavers had emigrated from Caucasus and Armenia in the 17 century, therefore all the carpets woven in Malayer and its surrounding villages are in stylised patterns, mostly in medallion and Herati design.
This one is woven with good quality wool and is hard wearing as well as being decorative and beautiful. The design is very interesting and is a very primitive way of showing traditional Persian patterns.
