Kazak rugs trace their roots to the western Caucasus, an area historically inhabited by Armenian people and Kurdish nomads. These rugs are renowned for their bold, abstract floral designs and vivid colour palettes, typically incorporating shades of red, blue, green, and yellow. The Kazak rugs featured in our collection are premium examples, crafted using hand-spun Ghazi wool and coloured with natural dyes.
The primary region associated with Kazak rugs is the Kazak district itself, which stretches from Erivan in the Armenian Caucasus to Tiflis near the Georgian border, with Karabagh lying to the southeast. Within the Kazak Khanate, rug-making traditions varied by geography: thick, plush rugs came from the mountains, while flatter, low-pile rugs were made in the valleys and villages—each location developing its own distinctive aesthetic.
One of the hallmark patterns seen in these rugs is the stepped, hooked polygon, which appears most strikingly in the deep-pile Lori-Pombak rugs. These often showcase bold, geometric medallions set against simple, uncluttered backgrounds.
