Persian Tabriz is known for its bazaars from the 15th century, and its revival of the carpet industry in the 19th century. Weavers in Tabriz have great skill and use a hook-like implement instead of their fingers to tie knots. The warps and wefts are cotton, the pile wool, and sometimes silk is used in the finer pieces. The colours of the finer carpets are delicate and refined, while the coarsest qualities are brightly coloured and rarely exported.
A wide variety of designs are seen in Persian Tabriz rugs, including copies of classical designs, re-workings of old motifs, and pictorial or figurative treatments. The most famous weaver was Hajj Jalili, who worked at the turn of the century.
