Shahsavan
Shahsavan weavings have been, and still are to this day in Iran, wrongly labelled ‘Caucasian’. However, research carried out by carpet scholars over the past decade or so has begun to set matters right. Rug designs in earlier times had a more naturalistic form, but the advent of Islam brought in non-representational and decorative patterns.
The majority of Shahsavan weavings available today are flat woven and in this field the Shahsavan are considered to be master weavers, they rarely weave pile rugs unlike other tribes.
The knotted-pile weavings found also belonged to the nineteenth century and were skilfully made. All Shahsavan are symmetrically knotted and have a softness of wool and flexibility of weave which appears unmistakable.
This one is woven with good quality wool and is hard wearing as well as being decorative and beautiful. Shahsavan is commonly known to have geometrical designs being a tribal piece.
