Kashan rugs are celebrated for their exquisite craftsmanship and intricate designs, originating from the historic city of Kashan in central Iran. Traditionally crafted with high-quality wool, silk, or a combination of both, these rugs are known for their density and durability, thanks to their tightly knotted structure.
The designs of Kashan rugs often feature a central medallion surrounded by floral motifs, vine scrolls, and palmettes, typically set against a richly colored background that may include shades of deep blues, vibrant reds, and lush greens. The borders are usually elaborate, adorned with continuous floral patterns, adding to their elegance and detailed craftsmanship.
Historically, Kashan was a hub for silk production and a major contributor to the Persian carpet industry during the Safavid dynasty in the 16th century. Today, Kashan rugs are highly prized by collectors and decorators around the world for their beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural significance, making them a symbol of luxury and traditional Persian artistry.
In Kashan, the inability to gain a livelihood from the barren land led the population to turn their hands to industry and make their town the principal centre in Persia for the production of fine textiles in cotton, wool and silk as well as fine carpets. They also created a very famous essence, named rose water, which is sought after worldwide.
Zobeida, the favourite wife of the famous Caliph Haroun-al-Rasheed, established the town of Kashan, which is situated between Tehran and Isfahan. The town of Kashan is the third in the long line of towns, which follow each other at distances of from 75 to 150 miles along the western fringe of the Great Desert on the highway to India.
The Kashan district is possibly one of the best producers of Persian Carpets. These carpets have taken the name of the region, and are simply referred to as the “Kashan”. Due to the very high quality of the wool, the very fine weaving and the beautiful colours and designs, Kashan have come to be classified among the finest Persian Carpets.
The warp and weft are made of cotton or silk. The designs vary from medallions with tendrils to vases and from all-over patterns to very fine floral designs.
