The Gabeh rugs, also known as Persian Gabbeh Tribal rugs, are woven by the Qashquai (kashkai) tribe in Southern Persia. Being the Turkic Tribe, they are the most important, advanced, and prosperous tribe of FARS. Renowned for their weaving skills, the Qashquai people are almost completely nomadic, residing in black goat's hair tents for about eight months of the year in a high belt of country extending approximately 150 miles northwards. During autumn, they migrate to the warmer coastal regions west, southwest, and south of Shiraz.
Originally, Gabbeh rugs were exclusively produced for their domestic use, but in the 1980s, Western dealers discovered these simple rugs with abstract designs, making them an excellent fit for new and modern furnishings and decor. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Gabbeh rugs became worldwide best sellers, captivating buyers with their thick pile and minimalist designs.
Despite having a long history of production, Gabbeh rugs remained largely unknown to the outside world. They feature a thick pile and simplistic designs, making them a perfect companion for modern furnishings. These versatile rugs can be placed anywhere in the home, from a child's room to a sitting room, adding a touch of tribal charm. This particular Gabbeh rug is woven with high-quality wool, ensuring durability alongside its decorative and beautiful appeal. The design of the rug showcases the tribe's inspiration drawn from everyday life, offering a primitive yet captivating portrayal of tribal motifs.
